Mission statement

The Indianapolis Parks Foundation is a not-for-profit that exists to enhance the recreational, educational and cultural life of the Indianapolis community by encouraging and soliciting support for our city’s parks system by: securing private funding to support the parks system; providing Indy Parks and Recreation with funding for land acquisition, park programs, capital improvements and maintenance; and advocating for quality parks and greenspaces in Marion County.

Actions

Actions are activities derived from the Plan 2020 planning process that a partner has committed to implement.

Indianapolis Parks Foundation is working on the following actions:

Greenways, Bikeways & Waterways

Strategy

Prioritize investments in projects based on identified overlaps in the multi-modal plans informed by villages and community nodes, anchor institutions, and cultural destinations.

Action

Advocate and fundraise to move the Greenways Master Plan forward, in partnership with the City of Indianapolis

Establish a work committee to identify public and private funding tools that advance and support the establishment of and connectivity to transit, trail and greenway corridors

The Parks Foundation has held monthly meetings with Indianapolis Skate Park Advocates to work to continually improve and maintain the Major Taylor Skate Park. Additionally, the groups are in the process of identifying a location for a second Skate Park in the City.

Examine the success of Indianapolis’ urban basketball courts, and other features/amenities, toward a more recreational city

Through a partnership with IPL, the Pacers, and the City, basketball courts were completed at Beckwith park. Additionally, two new basketball courts were completed at Tarkington Park through a partnership with Boiler Business Exchange. There are also two more half court basketball courts are Tarkington Park. Finally, in partnership with the Urban League, two additional parks are receiving a basketball court upgrade. The Foundation is planning for additional court improvements in 2017.
